Bought-in bottles or on-site PET blowing?
| Your situation | What to define | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Buy finished empty bottles | Bottle specifications, supply consistency, handling and entry to filling | That a new blow molder is required |
| Blow bottles from purchased preforms | Preform and bottle references, molds, output, utilities and transfer | That producing the preforms is part of the blow-molder supply |
| Retain an existing blower | Existing machine and molds, proven formats, utility and transfer information | That its output or interfaces suit the new filling requirement |
| Route not decided | Comparable alternatives using the same bottle and output basis | That machine price alone answers the make-or-buy decision |
What does the PET blowing machine do?
For the PET stretch-blowing route discussed here, preforms are heated and formed into the specified bottles in molds. Preform manufacture and bottle blowing are different supply decisions. Ask the supplier to identify preform feeding, heating, blowing, bottle discharge and the operations that are manual or supplied by another party.
Confirm that the application is the intended water bottle and filling condition. A reference for still-water bottles does not establish suitability for every hot-fill, carbonated, large-format or returnable application. The catalog photograph identifies an equipment category, not a verified model recommendation or a claim that all auxiliaries are included.
Match the preform, bottle and mold before comparing output
Provide the bottle drawing and sample reference, nominal volume, neck finish, intended cap, preform drawing/material/weight and the formats required. Record whether each item is approved or provisional. A shared neck finish or bottle volume does not by itself validate the entire preform, mold and machine combination.
Request the proposed output for each actual format and ask how accepted bottles are counted. Mold-cavity count and a headline cycle rate are not a substitute for format-specific confirmation. Identify the approved reference, test conditions, material supply and any exclusions used for the supplier's output statement.
What is included around the blower?
| Item | Information needed | Supplier response to request |
|---|---|---|
| Molds and format parts | Each bottle drawing and required machine compatibility | Included sets, change parts, ownership and future replacement route |
| Compressed-air provision | Machine requirement by service and operating condition | Required pressure, flow/reference conditions, air-quality basis and supplying party |
| Cooling provision | Machine/mold cooling requirements and connection points | Required conditions, equipment and connections included or buyer supplied |
| Preform and bottle handling | Feeding method, discharge route and retained equipment | Manual tasks, included handling equipment and interface owner |
| Controls, utilities and documents | Site supply, connection drawings and handoff signals | Installation boundary, manuals, testing and open assumptions |
Confirm air and cooling without inventing a utility package
Ask for the proposed machine's utility schedule before selecting or comparing auxiliaries. The offer should distinguish any different air services and state the pressure, flow units, reference conditions and quality requirements. Compressor, dryer, receiver, filters and related connections must have explicit scope states where applicable; a photograph is not an inclusion list.
For cooling, request the required conditions and connection information, then identify whether suitable site services exist or additional equipment is proposed. This is a procurement boundary check, not instructions for designing pressure systems or sizing a chiller. Do not treat one generic utility number as valid for all bottle formats and operating conditions.
Close the bottle handoff and evidence request
Identify the last function included after blowing and the first function provided by the filler or transfer supplier. Request the relevant drawings, bottle handling references and control responsibilities. Name who reviews the complete interface when the blower, conveyor and filler come from different parties.
Agree sample identities and project-specific acceptance checks for the empty bottles and their intended downstream handling. No universal tolerances or guaranteed changeover time are asserted here. Record test limitations, open formats and required follow-up; if the preform or bottle geometry changes, request a renewed technical review.

This image supports machine-category identification. Final model, output, materials, dimensions, utilities and included accessories still require a confirmed project quotation.

Questions to close before purchase
Do I need a blow molder if I buy empty water bottles?
Not solely because you are buying a water filling machine. Define the bought-bottle specification and handling route; a blow molder is a separate decision if you plan to make bottles from preforms.
Does a bottle blowing machine also manufacture PET preforms?
Not by default. The discussed stretch-blowing route uses preforms. Preform manufacture must be expressly specified as a separate supply requirement rather than inferred from the blower price.
Are molds, compressor and chiller always included?
No. Ask for the format and utility schedules and the included, optional, existing or buyer-supplied status of each applicable item. Final auxiliary selection needs the proposed machine's requirements.
Can one output rating cover every bottle size?
Do not assume so. Request output and verification conditions for each actual bottle/preform combination, with the required molds and format parts identified.
What you should leave with
- A bottle-supply route and format-specific supplier brief.
- Separate machine, mold, utility and bottle-transfer scope.
- A requested evidence set for the actual preform/bottle combination.
