What must be specified before a water bottle packer is quoted?
Provide the bottle reference, bottles per pack, arrangement, finished-pack dimensions where known and the intended film, tray or carton. State whether the purchase covers one packing function or a coordinated set of machines. If a packaging choice is still open, ask for distinct alternatives rather than one unexplained packing-line price.
A packing proposal must explain how the requested bottles become the specified saleable pack. A machine photograph or a film-wrapper description does not prove that collating, tray/carton handling, closing, cooling, discharge or downstream handling is included.
Compare the finished-pack routes
| Finished pack | Inputs to provide | Functions whose inclusion needs confirmation |
|---|---|---|
| Film bundle | Bottle count and arrangement, film reference and pack sample/drawing | Bottle grouping, film handling/wrapping, shrink process where applicable and discharge |
| Tray plus film | Bottle arrangement, tray specification, film and finished-pack reference | Tray handling/forming as proposed, bottle loading/grouping, wrapping/shrinking and discharge |
| Carton or case | Bottle count, carton/case style, dimensions, material and closure requirement | Forming, loading, closing/sealing and conveyors; identify manual or buyer-supplied steps |
| Retained packing equipment | Existing model, formats, drawings and known limitations | Interfaces, required modifications, control handoffs and who verifies them |
Convert bottle rate to pack rate on the same basis
For an initial arithmetic check, packs per minute = bottles per hour ÷ bottles per pack ÷ 60. Use the actual number of bottles in the finished pack and state whether the supplier's output is for one discharge lane or the total output. This calculation alone does not select a packer.
Illustrative buyer requirement only: 12,000 bottles per hour are to enter the packing process. The following values are ideal arithmetic requirements, not Allot Tech machine ratings, guaranteed good-pack output or allowances for stops and rejects.
| Bottles per pack | Ideal packs per hour | Ideal packs per minute |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 2,000 | 33.3 (rounded) |
| 12 | 1,000 | 16.7 (rounded) |
Ask what the quoted pack rate actually includes
Request a response for the actual bottle, material and pack pattern. Clarify the counting point, operating conditions, manual tasks, material replenishment, format changes and treatment of rejects. A headline mechanical speed and accepted finished packs over an agreed run are different statements.
Keep any allowance or performance assumption explicit and supplier confirmed. Detailed line balance and accumulation design are separate engineering work; this page helps ensure that the packing quotation does not use a different output basis from the rest of the requested package.
Verify accessories and acceptance with the intended material
List the included grouping, forming, wrapping/shrinking, closing and discharge functions, as applicable to the proposed route. Ask separately about format parts, guards, utilities, consumables, coding, inspection and pallet-handling interfaces. Not all of these belong in every order; the offer should identify which are required and who provides them.
Agree representative bottle and packaging references for review and testing. Record the accepted pack arrangement, closure/appearance checks and handling conditions using project-specific criteria. If the carton, film or pack pattern changes, request a revised scope and test response rather than relying on the original sample result.

Questions to close before purchase
How do I convert bottles per hour into packs per minute?
Divide bottles per hour by bottles in each finished pack, then by 60. For example, 12,000 bottles per hour in six-bottle packs is 2,000 packs per hour, or about 33.3 packs per minute. This is arithmetic, not a machine performance guarantee.
Does a carton packing price include carton forming and sealing?
Only if those functions are expressly included. Ask the supplier to identify forming, loading, closing/sealing, conveyors and any manual, optional or buyer-supplied operations.
Can I compare two packers using only their packs-per-minute figures?
No. First match bottle and pack formats, material, counting point, lane basis, operating conditions and included tasks. Request the proposed accepted-pack output and verification method on that same basis.
Are palletizing and stretch wrapping part of the packer supply?
They are separate supply decisions unless the offer explicitly includes them. Record the discharge boundary and the party responsible for subsequent handling.
What you should leave with
- A finished-pack specification for each bottle format.
- A transparent pack-rate calculation with its limits.
- An itemized packing scope and a supplier-confirmed test basis.
